Early intervention services help local child with autism make progress

RICHMOND, Ohio — For the first several months of her life, Addison Shimmel appeared to be developing typically, calling her parents “Mama” and “Dada” and interacting with her older brother.

But around her first birthday, her ability to communicate began to decline. She was later diagnosed with level 2 autism spectrum disorder, which is characterized by moderate challenges in social communication and repetitive behaviors and requires substantial support for daily functioning.

Addison’s family has since worked with local agencies, including the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ Early Intervention program and Easterseals, to help address developmental delays.

The Early Intervention program supports children from birth to age 3 who experience delays or disabilities in areas such as language, motor skills and social development. Services may include special instruction, occupational therapy, speech therapy and physical therapy, along with assistance related to vision, hearing and nutrition.

Early intervention specialist Jane Herron works with Addison at home each week, using play therapy, visual aids and music to help build communication and daily living skills.

Herron said Addison has shown improvement over the past year, including increased eye contact and interaction. She now uses a visual communication board and has learned some American Sign Language.

Addison also attends weekly occupational and speech therapy sessions through Easterseals. Her mother, Alexis Shimmel, said music has been especially helpful in encouraging her daughter to communicate.

Addison is expected to turn 3 in May and will begin preschool at John Gregg Elementary.

Herron said the child’s progress has been encouraging, noting improvements in engagement and daily routines such as feeding and personal care.
