The Wayne County Commissioners have recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
The observance aims to promote a more inclusive society where people with developmental disabilities are supported and empowered to contribute, according to a community announcement.
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was established in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan to highlight the importance of inclusion and support for people with disabilities.
“We continuously strive to ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities are met with unwavering support, acceptance, and encouragement as they build fulfilling, independent lives,” Wayne County Commissioner Matt Martin said in the announcement. “County Boards across Ohio continue working alongside dedicated employees and advocates to evolve policies, expand opportunities, and meet the changing needs of individuals and their families.”
Inclusion and support are key
Accepting and supporting individuals with developmental disabilities is essential to building a strong, inclusive community where every person is valued and respected, the announcement stated. When communities invest in understanding, accessibility, and opportunity, individuals with developmental disabilities are empowered to contribute their talents, pursue independence, and participate fully in civic and social life.
The commissioners noted this commitment not only improves the quality of life for those individuals and their families but also strengthens the community by fostering empathy, cooperation and shared responsibility.
“Join us in supporting those who are striving for success, reaching their full potential, and fostering true inclusion by breaking down barriers and creating new opportunities," Martin added.
