TROY — The Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) empowers people with developmental disabilities to live, work, and play as full members of the community. MCBDD provides case management for individuals ages 3 and older and Early Intervention services for children ages 0–3 with developmental delays. Early Intervention services are delivered in the home and focus on supporting families as they foster development in communication, motor skills, early learning, and social-emotional growth.
MCBDD also offers recreational activities, Special Olympics programs, and free caregiver trainings to support high-quality care. In addition, the organization funds in-home care, adult day services, job training, and transportation through a network of local provider agencies and independent caregivers. MCBDD serves more than 1,100 individuals of all ages, from newborns to seniors, throughout Miami County.
In 2025, MCBDD received a Three-Year Accreditation from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD), the highest level of certification available to a county board. This accreditation reflects MCBDD’s strong compliance with DODD standards and its commitment to quality services. The accreditation survey was conducted by the DODD Office of Provider Standards and Review, which oversees all 88 county boards across Ohio.
Following the two-day review held October 22–23, 2025, surveyors shared positive feedback. Individuals served and their families reported feeling supported and satisfied with services. Staff described a positive workplace culture where employees feel supported. Reviewers also praised MCBDD’s Early Intervention collaboration with community partners, the work of Investigative Agents and their strong relationships with local law enforcement, and optional programs that enhance staff training and family support beyond state-mandated services.
In 2025, MCBDD also passed a 10-year renewal levy. The organization has one additional local levy that was originally passed in 2000. Together, these levies provide nearly 70 percent of MCBDD’s operating budget, making them essential to sustaining services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Miami County.
Unlike many public entities, Ohio’s county boards of developmental disabilities do not receive increased revenue from rising property values, often referred to as “inside millage.” MCBDD levies are based on property values at the time they were first approved and remain fixed for the life of the levy. The levy renewed in 2025 was originally passed in 2011 and continues to collect revenue based on 2011 property valuations. The continuing levy passed in 2000 similarly collects on values set at that time.
While accreditation and levy efforts were important in 2025, MCBDD remained focused on meeting the needs of the people and families it serves. The organization continues to sponsor accessible restroom trailers at community festivals and outdoor events to promote inclusion. Family support programs for siblings, parents, and caregivers were also maintained to strengthen the support network surrounding each individual served. Additionally, MCBDD expanded its Special Olympics programming by adding new sports and welcoming new athletes. These recreational opportunities promote physical health while fostering friendships that extend beyond MCBDD services.
