TORONTO, Ohio — Organizers of the third annual Night to Shine prom in Jefferson County say volunteers and donors are again making the event possible for local residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The prom-style celebration will be held Feb. 12 at Toronto Junior/Senior High School. The local event is hosted by Crossroads North River Church and the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities as part of the Tim Tebow Foundation’s worldwide Night to Shine initiative.
Night to Shine is a prom experience for individuals age 14 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Organizers said about 100 “honored guests” are expected this year for an evening that includes dinner, dancing, games, limousine rides, a red carpet entrance and photos. Each guest will also be crowned with a tiara or crown.
Cookie West, public relations specialist for the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities, said 165 volunteers will assist this year, serving as buddies for guests and helping with event activities.
That group includes a glam squad of about 50 cosmetology students from Bella Capelli Academy and the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School, who will provide hairstyling, makeup and manicures for guests. Organizers said family members and caregivers will have access to a respite room during the event.
“We couldn’t do this without them,” West said, adding that volunteers play a major role in creating a more inclusive community.
Shari Prichard, an event organizer, said volunteer support has grown each year.
“Night to Shine would not be possible without our volunteers,” she said. “It’s been a tremendous blessing … how the community has rallied around it.”
Pastor Mark Prichard of Crossroads North River Church said the prom is meant to celebrate guests and bring the community together.
“It wouldn’t happen without the volunteers, for sure,” he said.
Organizers also thanked Toronto City Schools Superintendent Maureen Taggart for supporting the event and venue. Taggart will serve as a buddy again this year.
Several local organizations and businesses are also contributing financially, and donations are still being accepted. Checks can be mailed to Crossroads North River Church, 207 N. River Ave., Toronto, OH 43964, with “Night to Shine 2026” in the memo line.
