DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Another local police department is introducing a program for drivers with disabilities, primarily those on the autism spectrum.
The Greenville Police Department is partnering with the Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities for its new Blue Envelope Program.
This program helps people with disabilities feel more comfortable while interacting with law enforcement. These envelopes are a place to hold the driver’s essential documents: license, registration, insurance and emergency contact information.
Officers will be able to use the envelope to see communication tips to help make the conversation less stressful.
“Our goal is simple: to make every interaction safer, more informed, and more comfortable for everyone involved,” wrote the Greenville PD.
People in the program will also be given a blue vehicle sticker with an envelope icon to alert officers they could benefit from additional support and understanding.
