Earlier this year, I had the privilege of attending the ribbon cutting of the new Braille Trail at Hogback Ridge Park, where individuals of all abilities were exploring nature and enjoying one of our wonderful Preservation Parks together. Seeing individuals with developmental disabilities, families, and community members sharing that experience reminded me of the power of inclusion and the joy that comes from creating opportunities for everyone to participate fully in our community.
As we celebrate this season of gratitude, all of us at the Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities want to take a moment to say thank you. We are so thankful for the opportunity to support people with developmental disabilities and their families — it’s truly an honor to be part of their journeys.
We are especially thankful for the families whose advocacy and determination helped create the county board system in Ohio nearly 60 years ago. Before county boards were formally established in Ohio Revised Code in 1967, many people with developmental disabilities lived in institutions or were denied access to education, employment, and community life. Families and advocates demanded more for their loved ones, and county boards were empowered to develop local programs, coordinate with state and federal services, contract with private providers, and oversee public funding for services. Their vision for community-based support laid the foundation for the services and partnerships that continue to make a difference today.
We’re also deeply grateful for the amazing partners who give so much of themselves to ensure people receive the support they need to live meaningful, fulfilling lives. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the strong partnerships we share with our network of providers, local schools, businesses, community organizations, and neighbors across Delaware County. Your kindness, collaboration, and belief in inclusion make this community such a special place to live and work.
