Sean Sullivan is thriving at Goodwill in Marion, thanks to support from several organizations.
The 31-year-old Sullivan, who was born with developmental disabilities, has found purpose and connection through his job, according to a community announcement.
His journey to employment was supported by the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and Goodwill. With guidance and encouragement, Sullivan found his place at Goodwill, where he is a valued team member.
Sherry Stapleton, lead employment specialist and Sullivan's job coach, has been instrumental in his success.
“When I met Sean, I knew he could do anything he wanted to. I just had to make him believe in himself," Stapleton said in the announcement. "He has always had the drive, desire and the want to work attitude. He’s a great employee. We all love him. He’s come a long way, and we are all very proud of him.”
Sullivan enjoys the variety of tasks he gets to do at Goodwill and the sense of belonging he feels with his coworkers.
“I like that I get to do different things,” he said in the announcement. “And the people I work with … they’re kinda like family.”
Family support is key
Sullivan's mother, Roxanne, is grateful for the role Goodwill plays in her son's life.
“It gives him meaning,” she said. “It’s a foundation for independence.”
Like many parents of children with disabilities, Roxanne worries about the future and what will happen when she and her husband, Kirk, are no longer there to support Sullivan. However, she finds comfort in knowing that he is building a life of his own, surrounded by people who care.
Roxanne also expressed gratitude for the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities, which has provided transportation for Sullivan to get to and from Goodwill.
“I love my drivers from Wings of an Angel. But I do hope to maybe get my own driver’s license one day,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan's story is a testament to the power of community support and the importance of providing opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities, according to the announcement. With the right support, people with developmental disabilities can lead fulfilling, independent lives.
Sullivan's journey is far from over, but he is thriving and building a life of his own.
