COAL GROVE, Ohio (WCHS) — Advocates in Lawrence County, Ohio, are rallying to renew a levy that funds disability services following a previous campaign that nearly led to the shutdown of key programs. The levy, which previously failed, resulted in cuts to staff and services.
Susan Jordan, whose son Allen has benefited from Lawrence County Developmental Disabilities for 19 years, expressed concern about the upcoming vote.
"If the levy passes, then I know there are services he will be given," she said. "If the levy fails he won't be able to get those services and that really scares me as a mother and a parent of a special needs child."
The levy is projected to generate over $4 million annually.
For property owners, the tax increase would be approximately $7.29 a month for a $100,000 property, nearly $11 for $150,000 and more than $14 for $200,000.
Superintendent Julie Monroe highlighted the levy’s significance.
"It will make us sustainable for several years so we can depend on the funding for the people who need it the most," Monroe said.
Despite the support, opponents are vocal on social media, arguing against increased property taxes.
Monroe warned of further consequences, stating dozens will lose their jobs.
