October has been designated as National Disability Employment Awareness month.
The Defiance County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DCBDD) has joined the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy to recognize this nationwide campaign which raises awareness about disability employment issues while celebrating the skills and contributions of workers with disabilities.
The 2025 theme is “Access to Good Jobs for All.”
NDEAM began in 1945 as a week dedicated to raising awareness about employment for people with physical disabilities. Over the years, it grew into a month-long observance and expanded to highlight the importance of full workforce inclusion for individuals with all types of disabilities.
According to a DCBDD media release, the agency believes that all communities across Defiance County are strengthened by the inclusion of all people, including people with disabilities.
Throughout October, the DCBDD will highlight this year’s theme by sharing interviews with local employees. These stories hope to raise awareness in the county about the value of an inclusive workforce and the importance of building accessible and equitable work environments, said the media release.
“The DCBDD is honored to take part in National Disability Employment Awareness Month,” said Good Samaritan School Superintendent Heidi Hull. “We want to share the important message that every perspective matters and we deeply value the talents and contributions of individuals with disabilities.”
