This year’s presentation of “Defiance Has Talent & Heart” will be held at the Defiance K of C Hall at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.
The event will include a catered dinner, and auctions and raffles in addition to the talent presentations, and is being sponsored by the Trees of Life-P. Buckley Moss Society. This is the 13th year for the event.
The recipient of proceeds from this year’s event will be Good Samaritan School in connection with the Defiance County Board of Developmental Disabilities (DCBDD). The goal is to develop a Life Skills area within the school to teach the students important skills in cooking, laundry, housekeeping, etc., in hopes of helping them live as independently as possible, according to event organizers.
The event will also be a celebration of the 65th year for Good Samaritan, which was founded in 1960 by Mary Speiser and Elizabeth Cameron.
In the early years, classes met in the basement of the county jail before moving to First United Presbyterian Church, the children’s home and then the current building on Island Park Avenue in Defiance.
The fundraiser will feature musical performances by local talent with a chance to “vote” by donations for a favorite performer. Returning as emcee is Rick Small.
Those scheduled to perform are Shiloh Adkins and CJ Ridley of Pettisville, Mary Arps, Meredith Canales, Kirsten Coffman, Alexis (Weidenhamer) Davie, Kristen (Kurivial) Hug and Veronica Steyer, Apolline Pere, Mark Schnitkey, Randy Schroeder, Thom and Bethany Singer and Casie Sprow.
Additional performers will be the Defiance Dance Studio along with Amelia Canales and Tucker Sprow who represented their schools at “Dancing with Defiance County” in April. And special guest singers will be Anthony Rodriguez and Dominique Stanton who receive services from DCBDD.
The event also will include a silent auction with many prizes, including a recliner from Ken’s Furniture, sports memorabilia, a wide variety of baskets, gift certificates and P.Buckley Moss prints. Although Pat Moss, the Society’s founder, passed away recently, it was her wish to continue on with fundraisers and preserve her mission “for the love of children,” according to organizers.
Because of the meal, organizers ask that those planning to attend buy their tickets soon which can be purchased in advance through Sept. 16.
