Accessible restroom trailer available at Miami County Fair

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) is sponsoring an accessible restroom trailer at the Miami County Fair, August 8-14. The air-conditioned trailer is fully equipped with an entrance ramp, universal changing table for all ages and sizes, ceiling lift system, sink, and ADA toilet.

“In the past, we have offered an enclosed tent to change a baby’s diaper or have a quiet break at outdoor events. However, we know there are people of all ages and sizes who need similar facilities,” said Brian Green, MCBDD superintendent. “Whether an adult with a disability, a senior citizen, or a disabled veteran, we want to ensure that everyone has a chance to enjoy community events with the freedom of knowing they have a private and convenient restroom when needed.”

At the fair, the accessible restroom trailer will be located next to the poultry barn near the fair office, and will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The accessible restroom trailer is one of two trailers purchased by the WestCON Council of Governments with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to expand accessibility to community-based resources. MCBDD and eight other county boards of developmental disabilities sponsor placement of the trailers at various community events throughout the region.

Universal changing tables are becoming more common across Ohio and other states. The Ohio Department of Transportation announced in May 2023 that it would renovate 29 rest stops across the state, adding universal changing stations suitable for adults in each of them. The first two stops were opened earlier this year in Jeffersonville. Two will open in Miami County by the end of 2025, with two more opening in Auglaize County by the end of 2026. Many public facilities and businesses are also beginning to offer adult changing tables in public restrooms.
