WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities has implemented a statewide initiative aimed at improving communication and safety between law enforcement and individuals with developmental disabilities.
Ohio’s Blue Envelope Program was launched in Mahoning County last year. Now, Trumbull County is providing blue envelopes to drivers.
The envelopes include a person’s driver’s license, vehicle registration, insurance card and relevant medical information. The packet also includes a car decal, wallet card and brochure with instructions on how to use the items.
The envelope contains guidance for law enforcement officers on how to better communicate with individuals who may have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome or other developmental conditions that affect communication and cognitive or sensory processing.
Local law enforcement agencies throughout Trumbull County will receive training on how to identify and appropriately respond when a Blue Envelope is presented during a traffic stop, according to a news release from the Board of Developmental Disabilities.
The program is voluntary and free for participants.
