MIAMI COUNTY — Several Miami County Special Olympics athletes competed recently at the Special Olympics Ohio State Indoor Games at The Ohio State University.

In addition, Miami County’s Division 3 basketball team brought home gold medals for the second year in a row. The team competed hard against Hilliard in game one and Henry County in game two. Players on the D3 team include: Isaac Angle, Bryson Barga, Tommy Carter, Everette Daniel, Richard Eichhorn, Memphis Elder, Kyile Mills, Johnny Stewart, Stephen Stewart, and Blake Young.
Volunteers who made the season possible for the athletes include swim coaches Hannah Ryan and Mary Ivan; basketball coaches Dalton Logan, Alex Dalton, Johnnie Dennis, Sr., Jacklyn Vietor, and Blake Hinger; basketball referee Randy Buroker and scorekeeper Donovan Richard.
Miami County Special Olympics is operated by the Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities as an affiliate of Special Olympics Ohio and the internationally recognized Special Olympics organization. Miami County Special Olympics offers a wide variety of year-round individual and team sports for anyone with an intellectual disability, ages 8 and older. Sports included in Miami County are basketball, bocce, bowling, cheerleading, golf, softball, swimming, and volleyball.
Each program promotes athletes’ emotional, physical, and social health and instills a strong work-ethic and sense of teamwork. Through successful experiences, athletes build confidence and a positive self-image which carries over into the classroom, jobs and community.
